The conversion
Bulk mulch is sold by the cubic yard = 27 ft³. So:
- 1 yd³ = 13.5 bags @ 2 ft³
- 1 yd³ = 9 bags @ 3 ft³
- 1 yd³ = 36 bags @ 0.75 ft³ (compressed 40 lb bales)
What it costs either way
| Volume | Bulk delivered* | 2 ft³ bags @ $5 | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 yd³ | $35–55 | 13.5 bags = $67.50 | +~$25 |
| 3 yd³ | $105–165 | 40 bags = $200 | +~$60 |
| 6 yd³ | $210–330 | 81 bags = $405 | +~$140 |
| 10 yd³ | $350–550 | 135 bags = $675 | +~$250 |
*Typical US prices for dyed/shredded bark, delivery included or with a small fee. Bag prices assume big-box shelf price; spring sales cut bags to $2.50–3.50, which narrows the gap for small orders.
When bags still win
- Under ~10 bags: you're paying a few dollars extra for convenience — fine.
- No truck, no delivery access: bags go in a hatchback; a 5-yard dump doesn't go up a condo walk.
- Spot jobs: one new bed, tree rings, container top-dressing.
- Storage: sealed bags over winter; piles grow weeds and mold.
When bulk wins
Everything else. Above ~a dozen bags, bulk is cheaper per cubic foot, less plastic waste, and delivery drivers often tip-dump the pile exactly where you want it (ask for placement when ordering — save yourself 50 wheelbarrow trips).
