Coverage per cubic yard
One cubic yard = 27 cubic feet of mulch. Spread at different depths it covers:
| Depth | 1 yd³ covers | 2 yd³ | 3 yd³ | 4 yd³ | 5 yd³ |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 in | 324 ft² | 648 ft² | 972 ft² | 1,296 ft² | 1,620 ft² |
| 2 in | 162 ft² | 324 ft² | 486 ft² | 648 ft² | 810 ft² |
| 2.5 in | 130 ft² | 259 ft² | 389 ft² | 518 ft² | 648 ft² |
| 3 in | 108 ft² | 216 ft² | 324 ft² | 432 ft² | 540 ft² |
| 4 in | 81 ft² | 162 ft² | 243 ft² | 324 ft² | 405 ft² |
| 6 in | 54 ft² | 108 ft² | 162 ft² | 216 ft² | 270 ft² |
Coverage per bag
| Depth | 2 ft³ bag covers | 3 ft³ bag covers |
|---|---|---|
| 1 in | 24 ft² | 36 ft² |
| 2 in | 12 ft² | 18 ft² |
| 3 in | 8 ft² | 12 ft² |
| 4 in | 6 ft² | 9 ft² |
Quick rules of thumb
- One yard ≈ 13.5 two-cubic-foot bags ≈ nine 3 ft³ bags.
- At the standard 3-inch depth, 1 yard covers about 100 ft² — a 10×10 bed, almost exactly.
- A standard pickup (6.5 ft bed) holds ~2 yd³ level, 3 heaped; a small trailer (4×6) about 1 yd³.
- Need yards from an odd area? area (ft²) × depth (in) ÷ 324 = yards. Example: 500 ft² at 3 in = 4.6 yd³.
