Rubber mulch calculator
Rubber mulch is sold in 0.8 ft³ bags (usually ~40 lb, sometimes 0.5 or 1.5 ft³) or by the pallet. Enter your area and depth to get yards and bag counts.

How much rubber mulch do I need?
The math is identical to wood mulch — area × depth — but the material is heavier and bag counts differ because bags are smaller (0.8 ft³ is the most common size).
Formula
ft³ = area (ft²) × depth (in) ÷ 12 · bags = ft³ ÷ 0.8 · yards = ft³ ÷ 27
Example: a 12 ft × 6 ft play strip at 2 inches is 72 ft² × 2 ÷ 12 = 12 ft³ = fifteen 0.8 ft³ bags, about 0.44 yd³ and roughly 450 lb of material.
How deep should rubber mulch be?
- Landscaping: 1.5–2 inches is enough — rubber doesn't decompose and blocks light well at shallower depths than bark.
- Playgrounds (certified products only): follow the manufacturer's critical-height test, typically 3–6 inches of loose rubber. Uncertified “landscape” rubber is not protective surfacing.
- Put down a geo-textile weed barrier first: you can't easily add pre-emergent to rubber beds later.
Bags, pallets and weight
| Package | Covers at 2 in | Approx. weight |
|---|---|---|
| 0.8 ft³ bag (typical) | ~5 ft² | ~35–40 lb |
| 1.5 ft³ bag | ~9 ft² | ~65–75 lb |
| Pallet (75 × 0.8 ft³) | ~2.2 yd³ · 360 ft² | ~1.5 tons |
At ~1,000 lb per loose cubic yard, a 5 yd³ landscaping order is 2.5 tons — delivery matters even for “no-maintenance” mulch.
Frequently asked questions
How many bags of rubber mulch make a cubic yard?
One yard is 27 ft³, so it takes about 34 of the 0.8 ft³ bags (or 18 of the 1.5 ft³ size). Pallets of ~75 bags are the economical way to buy at that scale.
How much rubber mulch for a 12×12 playground?
144 ft² at a typical 3 in certified depth = 36 ft³ = 45 bags (0.8 ft³) or 1.33 yd³, roughly 1,300 lb.
Does rubber mulch settle or fade?
It doesn't compact like wood fiber, but colors fade over 5–10 years and pieces migrate. Hosing it back and an occasional top-up of an inch keeps it looking full.
Is rubber mulch safe for plants?
Fine around established trees and shrubs; keep it away from vegetable beds — it adds nothing to soil and traps less moisture for annual roots.
How heavy is a yard of rubber mulch?
About 1,000 lb (half a ton) loose — roughly double bark mulch. The calculator uses 1,000 lb/yd³; certified play products vary 700–1,200.
