How many pavers do I need?
Formula
count = patio ft² ÷ (paver w × l ÷ 144) × 1.10 waste
Example: a 16 × 12 ft patio (192 ft²) in 16×16 pavers (1.78 ft² each): 192 ÷ 1.78 = 108 → 119 with the 10% cut allowance. In 4×8 bricks (0.22 ft²): 864 → 951 bricks.
Common paver sizes
| Size | ft² each | Per 100 ft² |
|---|---|---|
| 4 × 8 in brick | 0.22 | 450 (+10% = 495) |
| 6 × 6 in | 0.25 | 400 (+10% = 440) |
| 12 × 12 in | 1.00 | 100 (+10% = 110) |
| 16 × 16 in | 1.78 | 57 (+10% = 63) |
| 24 × 24 in | 4.00 | 25 (+10% = 28) |
Don't forget what goes under the pavers — base stone and bedding sand are computed in the paver base calculator, and polymeric sand for joints is sold by the ~10–20 ft² bag.
Frequently asked questions
How many 12×12 pavers do I need for a 10×10 patio?
100 ft² ÷ 1 ft² = 100 → 110 with the 10% waste allowance.
How many 4×8 brick pavers per square foot?
4.5 per ft² → order 5 per ft² to cover cuts. A 200 ft² patio needs ~1,000 bricks.
How much waste should I add for pavers?
10% for straightforward rectangles with the paver running one direction; 15% for diagonal (45°) layouts or lots of curves.
How much does a pallet of pavers cover?
Typical bundles cover 100–120 ft². Suppliers will happily compute your bundle count from the ft² total this calculator gives you.
Pavers or concrete slab?
Pavers flex with frost (no cracking), are repairable piece by piece, and cost $10–20/ft² installed vs $6–12 for poured concrete. DIY math in the concrete calculator.
